Opinion By : Mourine Mwangi
A few months ago, I was excited about our Moringa project in Murang’a County. Knowing Moringa thrives even in hot coastal regions, we expected great results. But now, months later—zero germination.
At first, we thought it was a seed issue… or maybe planting technique? But then the farmer said something that completely changed my perspective:

The Soil that failed us
“This part of my farm never yields well, no matter what I plant.”
That was a wake-up call. Instead of blaming the crop, I asked:
“Have you ever tested your soil?”
The farmer was shocked. They didn’t even know soil testing was an option! Yet, this is one of the biggest reasons farmers struggle with low yields. Without knowing soil health, we’re just guessing which crops will thrive.

Our Next Steps:
✅ Conduct a soil test to check macronutrient levels.
✅ Work with an agronomist to determine what adjustments are needed.
✅ Turn this setback into a learning experience for better farming decisions.
Why Does This Matter?
Too many farmers are investing in crops without knowing if their soil can support them. This is why I’m passionate about bridging the knowledge gap in food safety and agribusiness.
